Boys Win Section and Return To State; Girls Finish 5th
2/6/18: The boys team is returning to the State Championship after winning the Section 6 Championship race at Buck Hill on Tuesday. In highly competitive and tight race, the girls team finished 5th. Haley Utendorfer qualified for State as an individual.
The boys team earned their win finishing 3 points in front of Lakeville South. This result was a true team effort. After first seed Carl Berghult ran into problems during his first run, he returned to the top of the hill to encourage on his team mates. They didn’t let him down. Soren Lindquist lit up the hill with a couple smoking fast runs that earned him a 3rd place finish overall. Not to be outdone, Chris Reichling also laid down a couple fast runs, including the 3rd fastest second run, that placed him in 7th place overall. Rémi Arnaud and Tanner Hopkins kept the pedal down to round out the scoring for the Hornets. Gavin Richards put together a couple nice runs for added insurance. This total effort by the boys earned them another opportunity to compete for the State title.
The girls team finished 5th overall, with only 28 points separating them from first place Lakeville North, in what is arguably the most competitive girls Section in the State. The Hornets came into this race skiing well with solid finishes over other Section rivals as well as the defending State Championship team from Chisago Lakes. However, today they came up a bit short. Haley Utendorfer led the girls and qualified for State as an individual with her 11th place finish. The girls team is young and continues to show great promise. With the entire Sections team returning and a host of additional young talent on tap, look for them to set the pace next year.
Way to go, Hornets! Proud of you all!
