Hornet Girls Win at Giants Ridge; Boys Finish 3rd
1/13/18: In weather so frigid it’s difficult to describe, the team travelled North to compete in the Giants Ridge – MLK Invite. This invite was comprised of two races, one in the morning (Sunrise Race) and one in the afternoon (Sunset Race).
Actual temp for the Sunrise Race was -20 degrees. With a MSHSL “no strip” rule in effect, our teams got to work. Led by Haley Utendorfer’s first place finish, the girls team won the Sunrise Race, besting strong competition that included last year’s state champions from Chisago Lakes. Ilea Corniea and Lily Cushman also posted top 10 finishes in a field with over 100 competitors. The boys team finished strong as well with a 3rd place finish. Soren Lindquist led the Hornets with his 3rd place overall finish. Tanner Hopkins 8th place finish rounded out top 10 finishers for the Hornets.
For the Sunset Race, temps rose to -5 and the no strip rule was lifted. For us, the Sunset Race was about building experience and confidence as we switched up rosters for the afternoon, while other top teams chose to keep rosters from their morning race. On the boys side, only Chris Reichling from the morning team skied in the afternoon race. Chris ripped down both courses and posted a 3rd place overall finish. For the rest of the boys team it was an opportunity to gain experience on more challenging terrain with longer courses as they finished 7th overall. The girls team was also challenged by the longer courses and consistency was an issue but they learned a lot from the experience. Despite having to hike during one of her runs, Allie Hoy was the top finisher for the girls with a 33rd place finish. The girls team finished the afternoon in 10th place.
I’m very proud of how the team performed, especially in the brutal conditions. The team is also very thankful to the parents that also braved the weather to travel up and support the team.
In addition to Edina, teams from Chisago Lakes, Stillwater, Brainerd, Annandale, Forest Lake, Hopkins, Hibbing, Centennial, St. Cloud, Northwest Alpine, St. Paul Academy, Buffalo, Simley, Lakes Area, Lake Crystal, Virgina Area, and Minnehaha competed in this race.
