Boys Team Wraps Up Season with 2nd Place Finish at State!
2/15/2017: The boys team closed out their solid season with a second place finish at the Minnesota State High School Alpine Ski Meet in Biwabik, MN.
The boys team came into the State Meet as the two time defending State champions. Weather and snow conditions were near perfect. Our awesome fans made the trek North and were out in full force. Edina lead after the completion of the first run. But, in a true nail-biter of a race, the Hornets came up a little short to conference rival Minnetonka. The two teams were neck and neck all season. In this one, Edina finished with 151 points to Minnetonka's 166 points. Three teams tied for third with 141 points.
Daniel Brunker led the way for the Hornets with his 5th place overall finish in the team results; this was especially notable considering he was still moving around on crutches just two weeks prior to the race. His was a remarkable comeback and close out to an impressive high school career, which includes two team State titles. Young guns Sam Shideman (8th grade) and Carl Berghult (10th grade) showed the promise that still lies ahead for this team with their 7th and 8th place overall finish in team results, respectively. Jack Keenan wrapped up his senior year by rounding out the scoring for the Hornets. With Soren Lindquist (11th) and Chris Reichling (11th) returning next year, a solid core team remains in place and they'll look to regain their spot at the top of the podium.
In addition to Edina, the following schools skied in the Boys Team Competition: Breck, Cook County/Silver Bay, Mankato West, Minneapolis Washburn, Minnetonka, Stillwater, and St. Thomas Academy.
In the girls competition, Chloe Townsend was skiing fast; holding nothing back during her first run but ran into issues and didn't finish. However, there was still much to proud of. The opportunity to ski at State is rare and something to be cherished. Chloe closed out her strong season and an incredible high school career with her third straight appearance in the State individual competition!
I'm very proud of not just these athletes but the entire team. By all measures, they had a great season. Well done, Hornets!
