Before, after school programs adjust to new school times
June 7, 2018 - Edina Community Education Services (CES) has announced new programming and new time slots for before and after school activities that adjust to changes in school start and end times for the 2018-19 school year. The changes aim to help students grow as learners and meet the needs of busy family schedules.
A new program called Middle School Mornings will be implemented, as South View and Valley View shift to a 9:20 a.m. start times. Elementary schools will offer before school programming and two options for after school, as Concord, Cornelia, Countryside, Creek Valley and Highlands move to a 7:50 a.m. to 2:25 p.m. school day.
“We know that learning is an active process,” said Val Burke, director of CES. “By providing hands-on, exploratory experiences and making the most of available hours, our out-of-school time programs allow students to cross-pollinate ideas from the classroom and continue to develop their academic, social, emotional and physical skills.”
The new Middle School Mornings program, from 7:45 a.m. to 9 a.m., will provide students with choices -- the Media Commons for study and quiet work time, or the gym for those who want to start their day with activity. Both spaces will be monitored by CES staff and students registered in the program can choose where to go each day, or spend a little time doing both.
The after school clubs and activities programming, which began this year at the middle schools, will continue in 2018-19, offering teacher-led groups and activities exploring science, recreation, service and leadership, academic support, theater, cooking lessons, the game of chess, and more. Academic support may also be available. Registered students will receive an activity bus pass each day they participate.
KIDS Club and WISE Guys out-of-school time programming will provide elementary before school programs beginning at 6:45 a.m. After school programs will offer options for an earlier pickup at 4:30 p.m., or a later 6 p.m. pickup. The programs provide activities that encourage students to develop skills, connect with peers and grow independence, and include regular field trips.
Each program allows families to customize an attendance plan that works for their family, in addition to a drop-in option. Registration for Middle School Mornings and KIDS Club/WISE Guys is open now; registration for after school clubs and activities will open August 1. Financial assistance is available for CES programs.
