History was made last Saturday, May 22, 2021 at the Art Downey Aquatic Center in Edina. In the Edina High School Synchronized Swimming Team’s 62 year history, this is the first time that Edina has won over St. Louis Park High School at the Central Section Competition.
SLP has a long team history of many victories at Sections and State. Many of their girls have been participating in synchronized swimming for years before joining the high school team.
In an email from Coach Carla Steffen to the Edina parents she stated, “For the parents who don’t know, only SLP has ever won the Central Section Championship…ever. We just took down a dynasty of serious synchro proportion.”
The other teams competing that day besides Edina and St. Louis Park were Bloomington and Osseo/Maple Grove.
The state meet begins this Thursday, May 27th and continues through Saturday, May 29th. Traditionally the meet is held at the U of M Aquatics Center but this year it is being held right here in Edina.
The schedule is as follows:
Thursday, May 27 at 5:00pm Solo Competition
Friday, May 28 at 5:00pm Duet Competition
Saturday, May 29th at 8:55am Trios and Teams compete.
The individual figure scores, which have already been judged, will be factored into the routine scores to determine the final victors. Spoiler alert: Wayzata has won the State Championship for the past 11 years. But, with Edina already taking down one dynasty, perhaps there is reason to hope for a different outcome this year.
