Math Team State Recap
Today's Math Team State Tournament was an exciting one for Edina! We arrived at South St Paul High School around 9:30 this morning. Two EHS students, Aryan Jain (11) and Alexis Yi (10), finished in the top 50 during the regular math team season qualifying them for the Invitational Exam at 10:30. The invitational is a 12 question exam that kicks off the state meet. The top 10 scores qualify for the live-action Math Bowl. Both Aryan and Alexis made the cut--Alexis scored a very impressive perfect 24 on the Invitational! She was the only female participant in the math bowl. Way to go!
At 1pm, the Math Bowl is a set of 8 timed questions where the students reveal their answers on whiteboards on stage in the auditorium with all the state teams watching. Alexis and Aryan say it's exciting and stressful!
All 9 Edina students participated in the main tournament in the afternoon. Each student competes in two of the four individual timed paper-and-pencil events: Algebra, Geometry, Trig, and Precalc. Edina alumnus Michael Tang was on the problem writing team this year and he wrote some tough ones! After the individual rounds the team takes a 6 question test together. The highlight of our afternoon was a perfect 24 on the team event. Go Hornets!
At the awards ceremony we were thrilled to find out that Alexis came in third place individually for the tournament! She put up an impressive 35 of 38 possible points. Awesome job, Alexis!
At the end of the day, Edina came in 7th in a very tight and competitive section. All students and coaches are proud of a great season.
We are graduating 2 seniors from the state team, Wyatt Richards and Will Leach. Returning members will be Aryan Jain, Alexis Yi, Jennifer Ai, Ryan Xu, Matthew Cao, Tiffany Qian, and Evan Jiang. Well done, Hornets!!
