Counting, shapes and colors. Cutting with scissors. Standing in line and sitting in a circle. Learning to ride the bus and navigate the cafeteria. Writing your name. Becoming familiar with classroom rhythms and routines. Learning to ask for help when needed. These are just a few of the essential skills the class of 2031 will need when they enter kindergarten this fall.
Ready, Set, Kindergarten! is one way some students are polishing these skills, building friendships and getting a sneak preview of the Kindergarten life. For 12 days this summer, 100 students were invited to participate in the program, a partnership between Edina and Hopkins Public Schools and funded by a grant from the state of Minnesota.
“This program is mutually beneficial,” says Leah Byrd, Early Childhood Coordinator for Edina Public Schools. “Students begin to experience the culture and community of school, and as teachers, we enjoy the opportunity to welcome new friends and families to the EPS community.”
The first day of school for Edina Public Schools Kindergarteners is Wednesday, September 5.
