Annual WISE Guys carnival fosters leadership and community service

WISE Guys, a youth program of KIDS club and Edina Community Education, held its ninth annual WISE Guys summer carnival and food drive at Highlands Elementary School on July 7, 2017. Not only is the event a time for fun carnival games and concessions, but it also serves as an opportunity for students to partake in leadership and community service projects.

Admission into the carnival games are purchased by exchanging food donations. Each donation benefits the food shelves at Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People (VEAP). In addition, the current group of WISE Guys, or students entering fourth and fifth grades, help plan and run the carnival with assistance from staff members.

“They run the games at the carnival and make the magic happen,” said WISE Guys program manager Jane Tierney. “The older students love having a turn running the show and the younger students typically can’t wait for their turn to be in charge,” she said.
