Walser Foundation supports Meal Fund

June 27, 2019 - The Edina Meal Fund has received a $1,000 grant from the Walser Automotive Group Foundation. This is the first corporate grant for the Meal Fund, a program created to ease the burden of school meal debt for families in a time of financial crisis.

Last year, the Meal Fund supported 532 families with $15,880 in funding. Families who receive Meal Fund support are typically experiencing short-term, unexpected financial difficulties due to unemployment, a health crisis, death, or other changes in the family situation. The Meal Fund’s goals are to prevent food insecurity for Edina students and to lessen the district’s debt burden due to unpaid meal accounts.

Donations to the Meal Fund come from individuals, rollovers from graduating seniors’ accounts, and fundraisers during the school year. The Walser Foundation has previously supplied grants to the EHS 212 Club, the Edina Education Fund, and helped sponsored the senior all-night graduation party.

“We are excited and grateful for Walser’s support as we work to replenish our resources for the next school year,” said Amy Olson, Meal Fund committee member. According to Walser’s Facebook page, 5 percent of all pre-tax earnings goes to their foundation to fund grants and sponsorships for local communities. Regarding the Edina Meal Fund, they posted, “We are honored to be a part of the great work you do!”
