U.S. News ranks EHS among Top 10 in state

U.S. News & World Report Best High Schools logo May 8, 2019 - Edina High School (EHS) is among the top 10 Best High Schools in Minnesota, according to the newly released ranking by U.S. News & World Report. The magazine’s 2019 rankings are based on revamped methodology and is its largest ranking ever. It includes 17,245 public high schools, compared to 2,700 in previous years. EHS ranks No. 10 in the state (No. 7 among public, non-charter high schools) and is No. 614 nationally.

The new ranking methodology, based on 2016-17 data, uses six “multiple disparate measures of academic quality,” each of which are weighted to produce an overall score. Among the measures are state assessments, graduation rates, and AP/IB participation and exam scores.

The magazine reports that it revised its methodology in order to produce a ranking that is “more diverse and collectively meaningful,” more historically comparable going forward, and includes all of the nation’s qualifying high schools rather than the 14 percent of schools ranked in past years. Additionally, U.S. News no longer categorizes schools with gold, silver or bronze designations. “The 2019 Best High Schools rankings are not comparable with Best High School rankings U.S. News has published in the past,” the magazine reported.

“We are very pleased to be among the top 10 schools in the state based on the magazine’s more rigorous scoring system. Each list or ranking of this type uses different criteria, so to be consistently included high on the list in so many rankings contributes to a more complete picture of the school’s overall success,” said EHS Principal Andy Beaton. “The U.S. News ranking reflects commitment to excellence on the part of students and the educators who have been their teachers throughout their Edina academic experience.”
