Pen pal program builds connection during isolation

April 13, 2020 – Edina Community Education is introducing a new way to foster connections during this difficult time. The Edina Senior Center and the Edina Branch of the Hennepin County Library have partnered with Edina Community Education to launch an intergenerational pen pal program.

The Dear Edina: A Pen Pal Program is intended to keep the Edina community connected while social distancing is in effect. Youth and older adults in Edina will be matched and have the opportunity to write at least three letters to each other. Letter writing suggestions and even fill-in-the-blanks templates are offered for the youngest letter writers.

Both seniors and student letter writers stand to benefit from the program. The letters will promote an interest in reading and writing for students, and will help alleviate boredom and loneliness for seniors. Each generation will share their experiences and perspectives, and help build a community connection.

Individuals interested in participating in Dear Edina: A Pen Pal Program can register by visiting the Community Education Services website.
