SVMS Peer Insights to receive PACER Center award

Peer Insights group performs a flash mob dance in the cafeteria May 9, 2019 - South View Middle School’s Peer Insights group will be honored at the PACER Center’s Unity Awards event on May 22. The group will be presented with the 2019 Faces of Change Award by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center.

Peer Insights was begun at South View in 2010 by special education teachers Jennie Schaefer and Jessica Cherne. It provides opportunities for special education students and general education students to have fun together and provide leadership for the school around themes of inclusion and acceptance. Peer Insights coordinates the school-wide awareness campaign “Spread the Word to End the ‘R’ Word” and organizes other opportunities for students at South View to get to know one another. Each year the group participates in a dance marathon to raise funds for Special Olympics and is known for dance flash mobs in the school cafeteria.

PACER’s Unity Awards celebrates “those who have made a positive impact by addressing and preventing bullying.” South View Peer Insights was selected from nominations from around the country.
