Norlander - Grade 1
My name is Sharon Norlander and I love teaching first grade at Normandale. Even after many years I continue to be amazed at the miracles that take place during this significant year. I am amazed as I share the moment a child realizes that he or she is reading in French. I watch the children arrive in first grade speaking primarily in English and continued to be surprised when they leave first grade effortlessly speaking in French. (One former student said: The French must have been hiding in my heart. And I didn’t know it was there.) I, also, find great joy when the children are surprised to discover patterns in the world of numbers!
I also appreciate the chance to work outside the classroom with the intern program. It is a wonderful way for me to give back to the profession and to feel young at heart. As I prepare and reflect on lessons with my intern, I have the opportunity to reflect on my own teaching and I am challenged to minimize the gap between education theory and what I practice in my classroom. The cultural and linguistic exchange has broadened my insight and I am energized by the enthusiasm and the hope of these future teachers.
Outside of class, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading and crafts. And in the summer, I work with Japanese and Chinese university students in an English immersion program. My intern this year is Mathilde Pfleger. She is from Strasbourg, France. To sign up to volunteer for field trips or parties, please click here.Here.
