EPS students receive high marks on National Latin Exam
Twenty-six Edina Public Schools students are being recognized for their achievements in the National Latin Exam. The 40-question multiple-choice test, sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League, promotes the study of Latin and encourages individual students. The test is offered to students on seven levels, which include Introduction to Latin, Latin I, Latin II, Latin III, Latin III/IV Prose, Latin II/IV Poetry, and Latin V/VI+.
Students are tested on grammar, comprehension, mythology, derivatives, literature, Roman life, history geography, oral Latin, and Latin in use in the modern world. Tests are administered by Valley View Middle School Latin teacher Mary Howe, South View Middle School Latin teacher Mary Rossini, and Edina High School Latin teachers Katrina Budde and Emese Drew.
Introduction to Latin students can receive ribbons and certificates of achievement. Students who take the Latin I-IV Exams also receive awards. Perfect papers receive hand lettered certificates. Top scorers receive gold medals and a summa cum laude certificates. Second place winners receive silver medals and maxima cum laude certificates. Third place winners receive magna cum laude certificates, and fourth place winners receive cum laude certificates. Students do not compete with their fellow students on a comparative basis, but are evaluated on their own performance on the exam.
