Edina ninth grader receives state department scholarship for language study abroad

Eliza Price, a ninth grader at Edina High School, has been awarded a full scholarship by the Department of State to study in China for six weeks this summer. The program is administered by the American Councils for International Education and is called the National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y). The program started in 2006 and draws from a pool of candidates around the country. Over 3,500 students each year apply and are selected by a committee of American Councils staff and volunteers. The chances of being selected are about 14 percent.

Eliza will depart for orientation in Washington D.C. in late June. She will then travel to Kunming, China with a group of about 20 American high school students from all over the country. While in China Eliza will attend language classes, volunteer, and travel. The program provides 20 hours per week of Chinese language instruction in a formal classroom setting. She will return to Edina in mid-August.
