Edina Hornets: Celebrating Six Months of Activities and Athletic Achievements
Six months have already flown by, marked by numerous remarkable achievements by the Edina Hornets this season. Boys Swim and Dive earned the State AA Boys’ Swim and Dive State Championship! This is their 15 championship.
Girls’ Hockey are the State AA Girls’ Hockey Champions! The score was 2-0 over Hill-Murray in the MSHSL Class-2A state championship game.
Girls’ Soccer won the Class AAA State Championship! They competed against Wayzata 2-1 at U.S. Bank Stadium last fall.
Girls’ Swim and Dive defended their state title in the MSHSL Girls AA Swimming and Diving Championship last fall at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center!
Edina Robotics team earned the state championship title! Edina’s FIRST Tech Challenge robotics team “Piece of Cake” competed at the state robotics competition at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium this month.
Debate: Edina adds another state title and two runner’s up to its collection along with several other notable accomplishments. State Champion – Congressional Debate: Devarsh Borah, State Runner-up – Lincoln Douglas Debate: Aditi Jha, State Runner-up – Congressional Debate: Pranika Kumar. Edina debaters have won bids to the prestigious Tournament of Champions in all four formats, with Pranika Kumar obtaining a bid in Congressional Debate at the University of Kentucky tournament, Jo Adam and Kaushik Chava winning a bid in Policy Debate at the Mid-America Cup in Iowa, Jonah Sher securing a bid in Lincoln Douglas Debate at the same tournament, and Jay Shapiro and Abir Rawal qualifying for a bid in Public Forum Debate at the Yale Invitational. Edina is the only school in Minnesota debate history to ever obtain bids in all four formats.
Boys’ Hockey won the Section 6AA competition and will advance to the State Tournament on March 7-9 at the Xcel Energy Center.
Quiz Bowl competed with a perfect 8-0 record heading into the state playoffs in February. They placed fifth out of 16 teams at state.
Knowledge Bowl is currently in first place in the metro and is competing at regionals today. A top 6 finish will send Edina to the State Knowledge Bowl meet in April to compete against the top 36 teams in the state.
Math Team: Edina finished the regular season 3rd place in the state. The team is heading to the state tournament as a team! The team has three of the top 50 students in the state: Henry Zheng (5th), Aarya Garimella (6th), and Stephen Kanti Mahanty (13th). Those students will participate in the individual invitational event at the state tournament.
Both of the high school’s official journalism publications, Whigrean yearbook and Zephyrus newspaper, were recognized with national honors through the National Scholastic Press Association Clips & Clicks Awards in February.

Edina won the regional Music Listening Contest and competed in the championship.

Several students participated in numerous College Honor Bands, including Augsburg, The U of M, and The University of Northwestern-St. Paul.

Adaptive Floor Hockey - South Suburban Flyers and Jets: Both the Flyers and the Jets will head to the state tournament in Coon Rapids.
Alpine Ski: Alpine season wrapped up competition on February 14 at the State tournament in Biwabik. The girls placed fifth at the MSHSL State meet. The boys had a great season but just missed advancing to state this year.
Nordic Ski boys advanced to the MSHSL State Tournament and placed 9th at the State meet.
Girls’ Basketball had a great season and advanced to the section 6AAAA semifinals, but was beat out by Hopkins 79-55.
Boys’ basketball will be finishing up their regular and conference season in early March.
Competitive Cheer Teams participated in the 2024 HS State Cheerleading Competition. The Varsity and JV teams recently traveled to Orlando, FL, to compete in the National High School Cheerleading Championship. Edina Competitive Cheer won 1st in Game day Cheer at Regionals.
The Edina Dance Team (EDT) recently wrapped up their season at both the Jazz and Kick State Tournaments at the Target Center. Jazz returned to state for the 10th consecutive season, placing 5th overall and Kick returned for the 4th time taking the program’s highest kick placement to date as 5th overall in the state. Stella Beck and Molly McGrane (senior captains) were selected to the Class AAA All-Tournament Jazz Team and Reese Burnham and Lauren Leiker (senior captains) to the Class AAA All-Tournament Kick Team. Four senior captains were selected to be a part of the Minnesota Association of Dance Team’s (MADT) All-State Dance team! Molly McGrane and Reese Burnham will represent EDT in Jazz and Stella Beck and Reese Burnham in Kick.
Gymnastics: Congratulations to Edina Gymnastics, 3rd overall at Sections as a team! Congrats to Ella Basile (8) on advancing to state in the Vault.
Boys’ Soccer: The Hornets were defeated in the Section 2AAA Championship game 1-0. The boys finished 15-4 and had a wonderful fall season.
Boys’ Swim and Dive: The Hornets have completed the regular season schedule and posted a season dual meet record of six wins against one loss. Eleven athletes will be named to the All-Conference team. Edina hosted and ranked 1st in the MSHSL Section 6AA Championship Meet at the Art Downey Aquatic Center at South View Middle School last weekend and is competing in the State Championship Meet this weekend.
Girls Tennis had a great season and placed second at the MSHSL State AA Tournament this fall!
Theater: Edina performed “The Laramie Project” in the MSHSL One Act Play State Festival earlier this month. The Thespians have had a great season of performances including the fall musical, “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” Theater for All’s production of “The Jungle Book,” and looks forward to the spring play “Clue” on April 26 and 27.
Wrestling: Edina has wrapped up the regular season with a dual meet record of 10-12 and are preparing for team and individual sections. Congratulations to Senior Captain Brody Perry for being named to the MWCA All-State Academic Team and reaching the 100-career win mark. Junior Troy Doroff surpassed the 50-pin mark and reached 100 career wins. Sophomore Anthony Nichols also hit the 50-career pin milestone and reached 75 career wins.
Girls’ & Boys’ Cross Country: Both our boys’ and girls’ Cross Country teams competed in the Section 6AAA Championship at Gale Woods Farm and advanced to the MSHSL State Tournament at the University of Minnesota. Boys’ results can be found here. Girls’ results can be found here. Fly #Hornets Fly!
Varsity Girls Volleyball team made it to the MSHSL class AAAA State Quarterfinals.
Edina Football celebrated its first trip to semifinals since 1978, and competed in the Class 6A Prep Bowl. They were defeated by the Centennial Cougars at the U.S. Bank Stadium.
Edina Orchestra has had a great season with many performances. Students represented the MN All State this past year at the Minnesota Music Educators conference in Minneapolis. The orchestra will be performing song selections and taking on a spring tour to Disney, which will include music by Shostakovich, Rimsky-Korsakov, John Baptiste, and Ludwig Goransson (composer of the Manadalorian Theme - This is the way!)
The Edina Hornet Marching Band season was a great success with many great performances including "America's Hometown Thanksgiving Parade" in Plymouth, MA and a trip to New York City to see the sights and take in a Broadway Show. The Band Program hosted the World-Renowned Dallas Brass and the Concert Band had the opportunity to play with them. They also hosted two musicians from "The President's Own" Marine Band who gave a masterclass to our students.
Choir has had a wonderful fall and winter concert season. Most recently, Bel Canto enjoyed a trip to St. Michael-Albertville making music with sister schools at the Lake Conference Treble Choir Festival.
