29 Edina High School students recognized in National Merit program

A total of 29 Edina High School seniors have been named 2024 National Merit Semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The program identifies and honors academically talented high school students and assists them in pursuing higher education. Sixteen of those students have been recognized as Commended students and another 13 have been named Semifinalists who will advance to Finalist standing later this school year.

Students qualify for the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in their junior year—which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.3 million entrants each year—and by meeting published program entry and participation requirements. To receive a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition by meeting high academic standards and other requirements. Recipients of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the Finalist group based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments.

Edina Public Schools will recognize the outstanding accomplishments of these seniors at an upcoming National Merit Reception on Monday, Nov. 13, 2023. The event will be held from 5:45 to 7 p.m. at the Edina Community Center, 5701 Normandale Rd., enter door 8. Students are welcome to bring family members, and a K-12 educator who they feel most influenced them in their school career. During the event, students will be asked to introduce their guest educator and share a few words about why the individual was selected.
