How to Respond in a School Emergency

Not all emergencies are the same, and each situation requires a thoughtful, coordinated response. That’s why Edina Public Schools uses the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, as part of our district’s safety plan.

The Standard Response Protocol

The Standard Response Protocol outlines the actions to take in different emergency situations. Each response includes clear, consistent steps for students, staff, and parents. Students and staff are trained throughout the school year to build familiarity with these procedures. It is important that everyone understands and follows these steps to support a safe, coordinated response.

Each action is also paired with a consistent symbol and standard announcement, called a “public address,” to clearly communicate what to do. Learn more about each action using the tabs below.

Edina Public Schools practices these procedures throughout the year. See how they may look in a real situation by watching this video from the I Love U Guys Foundation.

Submit an Anonymous Safety Tip

As a community, we can all play an important role in keeping our schools safe. If you ever have a concern, we encourage you to “say something” — whether by talking with a trusted adult or submitting an anonymous safety tip through our Say Something Anonymous Reporting System.
