Safety and Security

Building Safe, Supportive Schools

At Edina Public Schools, the safety and security of our students and staff is a top priority. We take a comprehensive approach that includes secure buildings, trained personnel, emergency planning, and strong community partnerships.

Through everyday safety practices, regular drills, and clear communication, we help make sure our schools are prepared for any situation, creating a safe and supportive learning environment for our students.

Our Approach to Safety

Lock

Building Security

We maintain secure school entrances with controlled access during the school day. Exterior doors remain locked, and many schools use video intercom systems so staff can verify visitors before granting entry.

Person

Visitor Management

All visitors check in at the main office and present a photo ID. Our system screens for safety concerns, including offender lists and custody issues, and helps staff know who is in the building and why.

School

Officers and Security Monitors

School Resource Officers from our local police department, along with dedicated security monitors, are present in our middle schools and high school each day to support a safe and secure learning environment.

Emergency Planning

We regularly review and update our safety plans, focusing on prevention, preparedness, response, and recovery. Staff and students receive ongoing training to ensure readiness in a variety of situations.

Safety Drills

Students and staff participate in regular safety drills throughout the year. Each school also has a designated team that reviews procedures and strengthens building-level safety and security practices.

Updates and Alerts

We communicate with families and staff through our notification system in partnership with the Marketing and Communications Department to share important updates and safety information.

Emergency Preparedness

Students and staff are trained to respond to emergency situations using the Standard Response Protocol: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. This nationally recognized approach, developed by the I Love U Guys Foundation, helps support community safety and well-being across our schools.

Submit an Anonymous Safety Tip

As a community, we can all play an important role in keeping our schools safe. If you ever have a concern, we encourage you to “say something” — whether by talking with a trusted adult or submitting an anonymous safety tip through our Say Something Anonymous Reporting System.

Community Partnerships

Edina Public Schools is stronger thanks to our partnerships with local first responders, including Edina Police and Fire, EMS, and the City of Edina.

Throughout the year, they visit our district to connect with students, support safety, and take part in school and community events.
