English Language Development

Serving Students Who Are Learning English

If your child is learning English, Edina Public Schools provides support to help them succeed in school. Our English language development services help students build English skills while learning across all subject areas.

We also assist students as they adjust to school and daily life in the United States, helping them understand expectations and feel comfortable in their new learning environment. At the same time, we value each student’s home language and culture. Students are encouraged to stay connected to their identity, take pride in their background, and share their culture with others in our district.

How Students are Identified

Students are identified for services when screening indicates they may benefit from English language development. This is a two-step, state-mandated process.

Key Development Areas

We support students in developing English language skills across four key areas. This helps students fully access grade-level learning alongside their peers.

Our Approach

Services are provided in accordance with state requirements and under the guidance of licensed English language development (ELD) teachers. Your student’s learning may vary based on school level and individual needs, but can look like:

  • Co-Teaching. ELD teacher supports instruction in the general education classroom.
  • Integrated Instruction. Small group instruction focused on ELD across the four key areas.
  • Dedicated Instruction. Instruction in a separate setting focused on building English skills.
  • Personalized Instruction. Targeted learning based on individual student needs.

To learn more about your student’s ELD instruction, contact your school office to connect with the appropriate staff member.

Connect With A Cultural Liaison

Edina Public Schools works with cultural liaisons to serve families with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Our liaisons help strengthen communication between home and school, support cultural understanding, and connect families through school and community events.

I had really amazing ESL teachers who truly wanted to help me succeed in learning English. They helped me built courage and showed me that immigrants have the same possibilities to succeed like anyone else.
