• Athletics and Activities

The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) board of directors voted on August 4, 2020, to move forward with most MSHSL-sponsored fall sports and activities while districts are operating in-person (traditional) or hybrid learning. MSHSL fall sports will be played with reductions/modifications. Students who opt for full time distance learning model through Edina Virtual Academy will be eligible for Edina Public Schools (EPS) co-curricular and extracurriculars.

On September 21, 2020, the board approved a reconsideration placement of fall activities, a decision that brings football and volleyball back to the fall season.

Our athletic and activities administrative team is working collaboratively to make necessary game schedule adjustments, and create plans and protocols that safely support our student learners and coaching staff through their fall athletics and activities participation.

Fall Registration is now live. EPS families can register for athletics and activities online.

Status of Fall Sports & Activities

A MSHSL “Return to Play Task Force” made formal recommendations to the MSHSL Board of Directors on August 4, 2020. The MSHSL press release shares the plan approved. Several modifications including; safety recommendations for practice and game play, crowd limitations and guidelines for transportation as well as games and length of season reductions. The MSHSL is asking all schools to follow the COVID-19 Sports guidelines for Youth Sports created by MDH.

    Crowd Size Limitations

EPS will be working with Minnesota Department of Health, Minnesota Department of Education and the MSHSL on what, if any fans, we will allow to see games in-person. The total number of spectators allowed at an event will not exceed the recommendations of the Minnesota Department of Health (25% capacity up to 250 people). Spectators will not be allowed indoors - so for the fall, this will impact Girls’ Swimming & Diving. If we are allowed a limited number of fans to attend outdoor events, parents of the players will have priority in terms of securing a spot. We may need to set aside seating for visiting teams’ parents as well.  We do plan to video stream as many of our home/away events as possible to our Edina Athletics YouTube channel. At this time, we will not sell a full year student sports pass.

Guidelines for Football and Volleyball Spectators

EPS does plan to provide team transportation to away events. However, new this year, families will sign a waiver when you register for sports that allows parents to arrange transportation to and from events when desired or when district transportation is limited or not available. We will follow MDH guidelines in terms of how many athletes will be allowed on a bus at a time (50% capacity during hybrid learning, 100% capacity during face to face learning). Masks will be required when traveling to events on a district school bus. District transportation budgets, number of busses, and number of drivers have not been increased for the additional transportation needed to accommodate all our team travel under these restrictions. Trips to away events will likely include a hybrid of some athletes on a bus and some athletes arriving in a family vehicle.

Member of team tests positive for Covid-19

We will adhere to MDH guidelines for any persons who may be presymptomatic, symptomatic or has a confirmed case. Coaches will keep accurate rosters including who was at practices and games each day should contact tracing be necessary. We will provide communication that may include individual, pod, and/or program quarantine.

Status of Activities, Clubs & other non-MSHSL organizations

A decision about fine arts, activities, intramurals, student clubs & other non-MSHSL programs will be made shortly by EPS district administrators.

    Sports Physicals

Student-athletes need an updated Sports Physical every three years. Due to the demand on clinics during the COVID19 pandemic, the MSHSL Board of Directors Executive Committee approved the following extension of the expiration date of the Three-Year Physical Clearance.

    • Each student must still complete the annual health history questionnaire (this will be completed in the online registration system).
    • Any student who had not previously participated and therefore does not have medical clearance on file will be required to have a physical and be cleared to participate.
    • A student with a three-year clearance that expires at any time from March 12, 2020 through the conclusion of the 2020-2021 school year will have the clearance extended through the completion of the 2020-2021 school year.

To find the status of your last sports physical, go to your parent portal of Infinite Campus, click “more” and locate the “Health” tab. The date of your last sports physical on file will be shown. Please scan and send updated physicals to Kelsey.Hans@edinaschools.org or Joseph.Burger@edinaschools.org.
