    COVID-19 Response

    School districts, including Edina, have put in place daily meal distribution for students in need. But it is not enough. While any student 18 and under is provided breakfast and lunch, district parents tell us overall food insecurity is a growing concern for their entire family, as businesses and organization shut down.  

    That’s why we have created the MealFund for Edina Public Schools COVID19 Response Fund. Working in partnership with Edina Education Fund, and Edina Give and Go, we have a goal to collect $75,000. We will use these donations to purchase and distribute evening meals, as quickly as possible, to families in need.

COVID-19 Response FAQ

The sudden closing of organizations and businesses, unprecedented demand for food support from other nonprofits, and a reported need* for whole-family nutrition has led us to create this emergency fund.

Currently, we do not have what we believe is a system to healthfully, systematically, and reliably employ volunteers, and are currently using Edina Schools hourly employees to help package the meals. Edina transportation employees are delivering the meals. However, as this is a fluid situation, with daily changes, please check back for ways to help.

Not at this time. We appreciate the generosity, however we do not have a way to store additional items. In terms of gift cards, we want to adhere to the need for social distancing and want to discourage additional visits to stores. Additionally, we want to maintain consistency in what we provide to all families.

No. Previous MealFund donations were applied to accounts already in arrears. In addition, if you have a regular ongoing MealFund donation through the Edina Education Fund, it will continue to be applied to future. Given the current financial and economic crises brought by COVID19, we foresee that meal debt is going to an ongoing – and growing – issue when students return to the school facilities.

A group of community volunteers has researched the most cost-effective way to meet meal demand, and have determined that another nonprofit is the most efficient provider at this time.

    In Edina, 8.7 percent of EPS students qualify for free or reduced cost meals. 28 percent of households are cost burdened, which means cost of living outpaces income (MN Compass).

How has EPS addressed this issue?

  • Historically, PTOs, principals and staff have been key partners in assisting families in crisis.

    In 2016, EPS created Meal Fund, which enabled graduating students to gift the surplus from their meal accounts.

    New for 2018, EPS created the option to donate directly to the Meal Fund.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Despite the district’s diligent attempts to collect accounts in arrears, including adding a new phone call alert system this school year, significant debt exists on the district’s books. As of Dec. 1, 2017, that debt was approximately $17,000.

No. Edina Schools policy is to never turn a student away from a hot meal, however, for accounts in arrears they cannot receive additional entrees, “seconds,” snacks and a la carte items. This is concerning for students who may rely on school meals as their main source of food and nutrition.

Historically, PTOs, principals and other staff have assisted students and families on an as-needed basis. In addition, Edina Schools created the Angel Fund (now MealFund) by asking families of graduating students to donate the surplus from their meal accounts. Neither of these solutions are sustainable for this growing issue.

For those families meeting the income threshold, and with the time and resources to fill out the required forms every school year, yes, the free and reduced benefit covers the costs of school meals. However, many families live just above the income limit to qualify. In addition, food insecurity can occur suddenly due to illness, job loss or change in living circumstances.

Yes. While MealFund is part of Edina Public Schools, donations are made through the Edina Education Fund, a 501(c)(3) organization. Please consult your financial advisor or tax planner for your specific deduction.

  • Elementary schools - breakfast: kindergarten eats free; grades 1 to 5 meals are $1.60; lunch is $2.80; seconds and a la carte items priced separately.
