Design Team Belief Statement
We believe all students are capable of high levels of mathematical thinking. We believe in the development of a student’s productive disposition which is the “inclination to see mathematics as sensible, useful, and worthwhile, coupled with a belief in diligence and one’s own efficacy.” (NRC, 2001, p. 116). We believe in a balanced and student centered approach to homogeneous and heterogeneous grouping. We believe that all students have a right to a mathematics programs that supports their growth, and that it is important to report growth towards mastery of all of the MN Mathematics Standards. We believe it is important for students to share their thinking through verbalization, manipulatives, drawing, and writing.

8 Standards for Mathematical Practice are the job description for the student:
- Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
- Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
- Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
- Model with mathematics.

- Look for and make use of structure.
- Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Design Team Updates
February 2017 Update: Full implementation of K-5 Math curriculum will be during the 2018-2019 School Year. We are currently collecting data and feedback on our Math in Focus review in the classrooms of 5 elementary buildings (excluding Immersion at this time). The Design Team anticipates presenting a curricular recommendation to the School Board this spring. The team has been busy establishing an implementation time frame, creating a professional development framework, and brainstorming a system to inform parents of curricular and pedagogical changes.

December 2016 Update: K-5 Math Design Team continues to meet and is prepping for the upcoming Math in Focus Material Review in 5 out of 6 elementary schools. Discussion around professional development and implementation plans are in the works.
Revised K-5 Timelines
Implementation of new K-5 Math curriculum resources will be during the 2018-2019 school year. The Design Team will continue to meet throughout the school year to make recommendations around professional development and curriculum resources for K-5 instruction.
