Edina is a suburb of Minneapolis with about 50,000 people. It is located seven miles from the center of Minneapolis-Saint Paul, which is a metropolitan area of about 2,500,000 people. The area is known for it's many lakes, parks, and cultural attractions. Edina is about nine miles from the Minneapolis Campus of the University of Minnesota. Edina is a quiet community with many families. Although there are several shopping areas in Edina, it is mainly a city where people come to live, not necessarily to work.
TRANSPORTATION: Public transportation in the Twin Cities consists of a bus system. The frequency of the buses, as well as the convenience of a nearby bus line will depend on the location of your Host Family. It can take up to an hour to get to Minneapolis from Edina depending on the time of day. Within Edina, most people use cars since the public transit is not as convenient as it is within Minneapolis or between Edina and Minneapolis. Most Interns use the free school bus for transportation to and from work although some Interns with host families near the school may walk or ride a bicycle. Host Families are often able to provide some transportation particularly if it is arranged ahead of time.
WEATHER: Minnesotans experience all varieties of extreme weather! Autumn in Minnesota is generally cool, dry and short with average temperatures around 45-50 degrees F. Winter usually arrives with cold and snow around Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday in November). The nights are almost always below freezing. Much of this time is spent indoors. Warm boots, a warm winter coat, hat, scarf, gloves, or mittens are necessities for comfort in a Minnesota winter. Bring whatever warm clothing you have, but don't buy special warm clothing before coming. Large selections of clothing for deep winter become available in Minnesota stores in September. Families may be able to lend you some deep winter clothing items. Spring begins to tease Minnesota in April. The daytime temperatures are generally above 32 degrees F. Summer comes quickly in late May with temperatures usually hovering in the range of 70-80 degrees F. Summer weather can be very hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching 85-95 degrees F. Mosquitoes are a nuisance.
LEISURE: Hours of operation for restaurants, bars and nightclubs depend on the part of town. Many of the suburbs settle down about 9:00 P.M. whereas establishments in Minneapolis or St. Paul often stay open past 1:00 A.M. Most communities have a few stores which remain open 24 hours/day for necessities. In general, the cost of living in Edina is less expensive than, for example, in Paris. Minneapolis is known for cultural opportunities with its many theatres, restaurants, and museums. There are also many bars and clubs, especially around the University of Minnesota campus.
