• Meet Kari Dahlquist, Principal

It is an honor and a privilege to be the principal of Creek Valley Elementary School! Our community of learners, staff, and families is hard-working, positive, and invested in education, and I am fortunate to work among them. Our student body is over 36 percent students of color, and over 20 different languages are spoken at home by our students. We embrace this diversity and are grateful for the ‘real world’ experience it provides. We hold high expectations for students and staff and believe all students can learn at a  high level.

Our school foci include literacy, mathematics, and student leadership. With support from the district, we review data and provide interventions, accommodations, and enrichment to help students grow. By differentiating and personalizing learning, we strive to meet the needs and passions of students. ("Personalization refers to instruction that is paced to learning needs, tailored to learning preferences, and tailored to the specific interests of different learners" U.S. Dept. of Ed.). Our recent focus on Covey’s seven habits has helped provide a framework to assist in building successful young people www.theleaderinme.org/the-7-habits-for-kids.

Students are technologically literate, and use devices as learning tools. All third, fourth, and fifth graders are provided with a Chrome Book to help support learning; primary students have access to iPads.

Our PTO provides a plethora of activities (book club, math night, carnival, movie night, read-a thon, STEM fair, CV fest, fun run, etc.) that benefits students, builds community, and raises funds. The PTO’s generosity in providing additional resources such as playground equipment and supplemental books for the media center benefits all children.

My formal education includes a B.A. from St. Olaf College and a Ph.D. in educational policy and administration from the University of Minnesota. Prior to becoming an administrator, I was a classroom teacher for 15 years, also in Edina. Among other things, one of my passions is international travel, especially when traveling with an educational lens. Favorite destinations include India, China, U.A.E., Turkey, France, Guatemala, and Australia.

I have served as Creek Valley's principal since the year 2000. As an employee, resident, Edina graduate, and parent of two Edina graduates, I am grateful for the educational experience our district provides for all students!

GO MAD! Go out and make a difference!
