Referendum 2015

The Edina School Board voted unanimously to conduct a special election bond referendum on Tuesday, May 5, 2015. The one-question referendum will request voter-approval of $124.9 million in bond funding, payable over 21 years, for the purposes of updating learning spaces and enhancing building security at the district’s 10 schools, while also improving district infrastructure.

The Next Generation Facilities Plan was developed to align and support the strategic advancement and program directions of the district’s Next Generation of Edina Public Schools Strategic Plan, which focuses on personalizing learning for all students and ensuring they have the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing, global world.

Specifically, the Next Generation Facilities Plan includes:

    • renovate and centralize main office areas to create controlled entrances and school access
    • update security technologies, including cameras, communications, and zone lockdown capability

  • Next Generation Learning Spacescreation of a variety of learning spaces to compliment current educational environments and meet the needs of diverse learning and instruction:
    • Renovations and additions of a variety of learning spaces at early childhood, elementary, middle school and high school that include spaces for direct instruction as well as individual, small and large group learning
    • Additions at Edina High School to accommodate the future incorporation of ninth grade to the high school experience, including construction of new learning and multi-purpose activity spaces to address curricular, co-curricular and community program needs

    • Improve the safety of outdoor playing surfaces including playgrounds and athletic fields, address accessibility concerns, and meet growing demand for outdoor spaces
    • Construct a new Transportation Services Facility to replace the current building with a more secure facility that meets current and future needs of the district’s fleet of school buses
      * Portion of this cost will offset by the sale of the current facility
If voters approve the referendum, the tax impact on the owner of $400,000 would be approximately $25 per month ($299 per year).
