A competency-based education is one that requires students to demonstrate mastery of standards as they are progressing toward meeting the EPS Educational Competencies. In this framework, learning of key standards is monitored systemically so schools can guarantee that all learners are progressing at a minimum rate while providing opportunities for learners to accelerate their pace.
Flexibility around time and support ensure mastery of the highest standards possible. By clarifying the standards and competencies, student’s interests, strengths and needs can be included into the design of learning pathways and plans. In the classroom, students will be assessed through demonstration of mastery of standards and competencies versus being evaluated upon the completion of work and activities. The difference is significant for schools which will require careful thought and planning regarding phase in.
