This guide contains the following information:

      • a few important details about how SURGE works
      • what to bring with you each day
      • contact information

We are looking forward to having another great summer at the SURGE Rec. Center!

      How SURGE Works:

      • SURGE Rec. Center is open from 7:00am – 5:00pm. Breakfast is available from 6:45am – 9:00am daily.

      • We will be going on a field trip everyday this summer. We will be out of the building from 10:00am – 3:00pm, unless otherwise noted. There is not a stay-back option.

      • Each week you will be e-mailed the newsletter for the upcoming week. This newsletter provides the details & times for the next week’s field trips. Please make sure the main office has your correct e-mail address on file.

      • Youth are required to sign-in everyday when they arrive. Sign-out is required by an adult unless parents have given staff specific instructions that youth can sign themselves out.

      • Attendance and the morning meeting begin around 9:30am; please ensure that you arrive by this time each day.

      The Edina Pool Option:

SURGE youth will have many options to choose from each week. The Edina Pool is one of those options. It is a choice two or more days a week.

We strongly recommend purchasing a pool pass from the city of Edina if your youth will be choosing to go to the pool often.

For those without a pool pass, there is an additional cost of $11.25 for each trip to the pool, which must be brought in cash and paid at the pool on that day. SURGE youth will be responsible for either paying at the gate or showing their pass to get into the pool. SURGE will not pay pool admissions as this is only an option and not a mandatory event.

Edina Pool passes are available for purchase through the Edina Aquatic Center’s web site.

      What to Bring Everyday:

Required: Bag lunch, sunscreen, water bottle, field-trip appropriate footwear.

Recommended: Swimsuit, towel, socks, optional spending money.

      A note about personal electronics:

      • Youth may bring them and use them while at SURGE and on field trips but if they do so it is entirely at their own risk- staff will not be responsible for watching youth’s electronics, please plan accordingly.

      • Youth are allowed to use their devices as long as they are being used appropriately- failure to do so will result in them being taken away by the staff and returned to the youth’s parent at the end of the day.

      In Case of Rain:

Occasionally during the summer, we experience rain and other inclement weather, as many of our field trips are outdoors and planned well in advance, we do our best to follow the events on our calendar
      .
In general, if we have to cancel a field trip due to weather, we will have an alternate plan in place by that morning’s meeting.

Examples of rain-out field trips include: bowling, going to the library, roller-skating, swimming at shoreview or going to a mall/movie.

On days when rain or other weather seems to be a possibility, we recommend sending socks, optional spending money, and a library card with your youth.

      Summer Service Learning:

SURGE youth will have a variety of exciting service learning opportunities this summer!

SURGE youth will have the option to participate in several different service projects including working with Friends of the Mississippi, VEAP, visiting Sunrise Assisted Living Center, and volunteering at the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery.
