    Driver's Education (14.5+)

    Edina Community Education partners with Safeway Driving School to create safe, responsible teen drivers. Classroom and behind-the-wheel lessons emphasize defensive driving techniques tailored for the inexperienced teen driver while targeting to influence the invincible teen attitude.

    Classroom Training

    Students must attend 30 hours of classroom training in order to pass the classroom phase. Classroom training and registration for Behind the Wheel instruction is required before the student can take the state permit test.

    Behind-the-wheel training consists of six hours of one-on-one private instruction with a responsible, professional driving instructor. Lessons are two hour sessions and include pick-up and drop-off from home, work or school. Training is done on actual city streets and highways. Instructors are provided by Safeway Driving School.     Minnesota law requires anyone under 18 years of age to attend 30 hours of classroom training before they can take the Knowledge (or Permit) Test and an additional 6 hours of behind-the-wheel lessons before they can take the Road Test.

    License Requirements  
    Students may start classes at age 14 1/2, take the Knowledge Test and obtain their Instruction Permit at age 15, and take the Road Test and obtain their Provisional License at age 16. To be eligible to take the Road Test, students must have had their Instruction Permit for a minimum of six months
