As you have probably heard, several cases of measles have been confirmed in Hennepin County by the Minnesota Department of Health. The best preventative measure is to be sure you and your children have been vaccinated with the measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccine. If your child is 1 year old or older and has never received the MMR vaccine, it is not too late to have them vaccinated. Ask your health care provider for more information.
Watch for symptoms of measles regardless of vaccination status. Symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, followed by a rash that usually spreads from the head to the rest of the body. Measles is very contagious. Call your primary care provider or clinic right away if you see symptoms. They will give you instruction on whether you should come to the clinic. Find more information about the measles on the Minnesota Department of Health website. Information is also available in Somali and Spanish.

Each spring, high school and middle school health staff notify families of students who are missing immunizations to be in compliance with Minnesota state law for the 2017-18 school year. Compliance with the immunization law is required for students to access their school schedule at Get Connected Day, in August and to start school in September. Families with student’s moving into 7th and 10th grades who will not be in compliance will be receive an emailed letter noting what immunizations are needed to be in compliance for next fall.
If you receive notification that your student is out of compliance, call your clinic now to schedule an appointment for all required immunizations or call for an updated record and bring it to the health office.
